The research group LEXYTRAD and the Costa del Sol Health Agency have been collaborating since November 2019 on the regional project "Multilingual dialogue systems using neural networks for apps in the healthcare domain: the triage (Spanish-English/Arabic)". After the outbreak of the pandemic caused by COVID-19, and the resulting overcrowded hospitals, Gloria Corpas, head of LEXYTRAD, proposed the idea to help to the healthcare personnel by adapting the research carried out in the Triage project to the new situation. This is how the idea of translating the pre-triage adapted to COVID-19 into 28 languages arose (initially 15), which led to the creation of a multilingual system for all the selected languages (Albanian, Arabic, Bosnian-Croatian, Bulgarian, Chinese, Dutch, English, Estonian, French, German, Greek, Hungarian, Italian, Indonesian, Kazakh, Korean, Lithuanian, Norwegian, Portuguese, Farsi, Romanian, Russian, Serbian, Slovenian, Swedish, Tagalog, Turkish and Ukrainian). The initiative was well received by the healthcare professionals and improved the communication with patients showing symptoms of the disease.
