Natalie Kübler

Natalie Kübler es catedrática de Traducción Especializada y Lenguas para Fines Específicos en la Université Paris Diderot (Francia). En la actualidad, es directora del equipo de investigación CLILLAC-ARP y del Centre de Ressources en Langues, este último desde 2007. Asimismo, es considerada como una de las pioneras en la introducción de la lingüística de corpus en los estudios de traducción especializada. Sus principales áreas de enseñanza e investigación versan sobre la lingüística de corpus y las lenguas para fines específicos, así como la traducción especializada y la lingüística de corpus aplicada a la enseñanza y aprendizaje de lenguas y de la traducción.

Corpus Linguistics, the Idiom Principle and Specialised Translation: The Importance of Phraseology

This presentation aims at presenting how research and practice have evolved in Specialized Translation Studies with the epistemological turn of Corpus-Based Translation Studies (CBTS). I will first attempt to give a definition of Specialized Translation (SP) in the light of research in Languages for Specific Purposes (LSPs) and Corpus linguistics, but also, in the light of practical needs SP. This field of research and practice has developed since the fifties into a wide field including CAT-tool, ergonomy, cognitive aspects of the translation process and many others. My aim is to show how specialized translation is closely linked to genre studies, LSP studies and corpora because it requires from translators to acquire knowledge in specialized domains and also knowledge of the different textual genres. Consequently, the idiom principle plays an important role in specialized translation as it is linked to the various specialized domains and textual genres. Phraseology thus representing the incarnation of the idiom principle, it is crucial for translators to understand and master phraseology both in the source and target language.
