Es una inflamación de la articulación de la rodilla. Si se tiene osteoartritis, el cartílago articular se va erosionando gradualmente y se hace más fino.

Osteoarthritis, commonly known as wear-and-tear arthritis, is a condition in which the natural cushioning between joints — cartilage — wears away. When this happens, the bones of the joints rub more closely against one another with less of the shock-absorbing benefits of cartilage. The rubbing results in pain, swelling, stiffness, decreased ability to move and, sometimes, the formation of bone spurs.

La causa más frecuente de rodilla dolorosa a partir de los 50 años es la gonartrosis (GN) u osteoartritis de rodilla (OA), terminología de los anglosajones. Se trata de una enfermedad degenerativa articular cuyos principales factores responsables son la longevidad, la genética y la obesidad y que se presenta desde el punto de vista clínico con síntomas de dolor, restricción funcional y deformidad, fenómenos que conducen con el tiempo a la aparición de incapacidad laboral temporal (IT) o definitiva.
