El endotelio corneal es una monocapa de células hexagonales que cubre la superficie interna de la córnea, con apariencia de un panal de abejas. Este endotelio actúa como una barrera entre el estroma corneal y el humor acuoso, limitando el paso de agua y solutos desde la cámara anterior al interior del estroma, los cuales traspasan al endotelio debido a los gradientes osmótico y presión hidrostática.

The corneal endothelium is a single layer of hexagonally shaped cells resting on Descemet’s membrane and lining the posterior surface of the cornea. Its central role in normal corneal physiology has been the subject of several reviews. This cell layer has two major functions. First, by continuously pumping fluid and ions out of the stroma into the aqueous, it is the principal mechanism responsible for maintaining corneal dehydration and transparency […] The second function of the corneal endothelium is that of a physical barrier controlling the entry of fluid and dissolved solutes into the stroma from the aqueous humor.
