La gingivitis es una enfermedad reversible que afecta a las encías, que como consecuencia de un proceso de inflamación, sangran, cambian de color (encías rojas) y se vuelven más grandes. Está causada por una infección que crean las bacterias. Es una enfermedad inflamatoria periodontal reversible porque no llega a afectar el hueso que rodea el diente.

Gingivitis is a common and mild form of gum disease (periodontal disease) that causes irritation, redness and swelling (inflammation) of your gums. It can lead to much more serious gum disease (periodontitis) and eventual tooth loss. The most common cause of gingivitis is poor oral hygiene.
Las mujeres parecen tener mejores condiciones de enfermedad periodontal según la presencia de bolsas periodontales, pero con aumento en gingivitis y presencia de cálculos.
